[edit] Course content
An understanding of the mechanical properties of materials is an important factor in choosing a material for a particular design application. Being able to predict materials failure is of crucial importance in all branches of engineering. This unit introduces the mechanical properties of materials to those who previously studied Part I Natural Sciences. After the course, students should be able to discuss elastic behaviour, plastic deformation, fast fracture, fatigue and creep, and relate these properties to the underlying structure where appropriate. Preliminary consideration of factors affecting materials selection is also covered.
