[edit] Introduction
This is the laser and UV safety homepage of the Pembroke Street Site of the department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology. Its purpose is to list registered users, provide services and links on laser safety and UV safety related issues and to provide contact information and procedures in case of emergencies. All potential users of lasers and UV sources must register with the laser safety officer (LSO). All new laser equipment purchased must also be registered with the LSO.

Read, fill in using MS Word or by hand, sign, and return.
Note: USE the tab key to move between lines. DO NOT USE the enter key as this distorts the page layout.
Check on this list whether your lasers are registered and whether you are authorised to use them. People who do not appear on this list are not authorised to operate laser equipment.

[edit] Useful Links
- University Safety Office: Lasers. The laser safety representative is Lisabeth Yates (tel: 33301). She keeps a laser safety resource list which is updated regularly and which she will send out on request. She also keeps a calibrated laser power meter which you can borrow to test emission levels from your laser sources. University Laser Safety Manual: download manual
- www.laserinstitute.org has excellent links to laser safety related information, including a good introductory text on the risks involved when working with lasers. Note that the US laser classification scheme differs from the European standard and this text is for general information only.
- www.kentek-laser.com (US) distributes and provides info on Safety eyewear, safety screens, etc. Make sure that you buy safety equipment via European agents only and make sure to obtain CE marked equipment only.
- www.laser2000.co.uk provides an online calculator to work out what safety goggles you'll need for your application. Goggles are a last resort: Their requirement means that your situation is potentially dangerous. Always think about proper administrative and engineering controls which would render your laser application inherently safe before considering buying safety goggles.
